The Unemployment Tsunami

While the visual to the left is frightening to watch (click here), I wonder why the mid-west seems so unaffected. Is it because of a lack of jobs/people already?

And while it's bad in the states, the second map suggests the U.S. is relatively better off than the rest of the world (click on the image to enlarge). Unemployment rates of 40%, 50% and 60% are almost hard to fathom.
